Chris Iannetta of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim named the American League Player of the Week

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim catcher Chris Iannetta has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 15th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Iannetta batted .429 (9-for-21) with two doubles, three home runs, five RBI, seven runs scored and two walks over six games to claim his first career weekly honor. He is the first Angel to win the award this season (last accomplished by Albert Pujols for the week ending August 5, 2012) and he becomes the first Angels catcher to get tabbed as Player of the Week since Ellie Rodriguez was the franchise's first weekly winner during the 1974 season. The right-handed-hitting backstop led the A.L. in slugging percentage (.952), was second to teammate Mark Trumbo in total bases (20), was tied for second in homers, was tied for fourth in runs scored, was sixth in batting average and was tied for sixth in on-base percentage (.500).

On Tuesday, the 30-year-old Iannetta tied a season high with three hits, including a double and a two-run homer as the Halos doubled up the Toronto Blue Jays, 12-6, at the Rogers Centre. Iannetta's blast, the last of four Los Angeles homers on the night, came in the sixth frame with one on to give the Angels a seven-run cushion in the eventual triumph. On Thursday, the Providence, Rhode Island native singled, walked and scored the Angels' first run of the game as they went on to edge the Jays, 4-3, to complete a threegame sweep. The next night, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill product went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two runs scored as the Houston Astros topped the Angels, 9-7, at Minute Maid Park. Despite the loss, Iannetta was one of four Angel batters with multiple hits. In a Saturday evening tilt between the two teams, the fourth round pick in the 2004 Draft (by Colorado) put together another 2-for-4 showing, launching a solo shot in the third frame and singling home a run an inning later to guide the Angels to a 6-2 win. His second straight multi-hit game marked the first such occurrence for the eight-year veteran since April 16th and 19th of this season.
